The Perth Bears, the NRL’s newest expansion team, have confirmed their intent to pursue marquee signings ahead of their 2027 debut, with head coach Mal Meninga naming Canterbury Bulldogs forward Jacob Preston as a top recruitment target.
Preston has rapidly become one of the NRL’s most promising back-rowers since joining the Bulldogs in 2023. He played a central role in the club’s transformation from wooden spoon contenders to finals contenders and has now earned selection in the NSW Blues squad. His performance and leadership have seen him emerge as a cornerstone of the Bulldogs’ long-term strategy, with internal support for his development into a future captain.
Meninga’s interest in Preston is strategic as well as sentimental. Preston previously played for the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup, establishing a link with the historic Bears identity that Perth now seeks to revive and rebrand. His connection to the Bears and proven NRL credentials make him an ideal foundation signing for the new franchise.
Although NRL rules prevent rival clubs from initiating contact with off-contract players until 1 November 2026, Meninga has confirmed that Preston is part of the Bears’ forward-looking recruitment strategy. The club’s leadership is not just focused on building a team for 2027, but on long-term sustainability and competitiveness.
Preston’s career trajectory was significantly influenced by a recruitment pitch from Bulldogs GM Phil Gould, who identified the young forward during his time at North Sydney. Since moving to the Bulldogs, Preston has won the club’s Dr George Peponis Medal in his debut year and has become a reliable performer on both sides of the ball.
Despite the Bears’ interest, it remains unlikely that Preston will be released by the Bulldogs. He is highly valued within the club’s development pathway, has become a fan favourite, and is thriving under the coaching of Cameron Ciraldo. The Bulldogs’ current undefeated status further cements Preston’s position as a core member of the squad.
